Why Nottingham Drivers Are Losing Cars to "Invisible" Thieves
Gone in 60ish seconds.

If you’ve seen the video we just posted on our socials, you’ll know exactly why we’re writing this.
It’s a quiet street in Nottingham. Two lads walk up to a front door, no crowbars or bricks, just a couple of black bags. Within 40 seconds, the BMW on the drive flashes its lights. The mirrors unfold. They back out and disappear. No noise or broken glass. The owner is still tucked up in bed.
At 3D Autokeys, we see the aftermath of these “Relay Attacks” every week. They’re not only happening in big cities anymore, but they’re occurring right on our doorsteps in Notts. If you have a car with keyless entry, you need to know how criminals are doing it and, more importantly, how to stop them.
How They’re “Ghosting” Your Car
A relay attack is basically a high-tech game of “pass the parcel.”
One thief stands by your front door with a booster. It “grabs” the signal from your keys sitting on the hallway table. They beam that signal to the second thief by your car. Your car thinks you are standing there with the fob. It unlocks, the immobiliser disarms, and they drive away.
The worst part? Your car’s factory alarm won’t even chirp, because it thinks you just opened the door with your key.
Three Ways to Shut Them Down — The 3D Autokeys Guide
We’re not here to just point out the problem; we’re here to fix it. If you want to make sure your car is still there in the morning, here are the three things we recommend right now:

1. The Faraday Pouch (The Quick Fix)
This is your first line of defence. It’s a small pouch lined with signal-blocking material. You pop your keys in as soon as you get home, and it “kills” the signal. If the signal can’t leave, thieves can’t “grab” it from outside your door. We’ve got these in the shop. Just make sure you test them regularly. The lining can wear out over time.
2. The “Sleeping” Battery (The Smart Fix)
This is a game-changer. We can fit a motion-sensing “smart” battery into your existing key fob. If the key hasn’t moved for three minutes (like when it’s sat on your sideboard), the battery goes to sleep and stops broadcasting a signal entirely. As soon as you pick your keys up in the morning, it wakes back up. No signal while you sleep means nothing for the thieves to steal.
3. The Steering Lock (The “Old School” Fix)
Never underestimate a Disklok or a heavy-duty steering bar. Even if a thief manages to “relay” your signal and get inside, they look at that massive hunk of yellow metal on your wheel and realise they’ve got a 10-minute job on their hands involving a noisy power saw. Usually, they’ll just walk to the next house. It’s the ultimate visual “get lost” to a thief.

We’ve long been Nottingham’s go-to for keys and security, watching thieves get smarter. It’s time to stay ahead.
If you’re worried about your car or want us to check if your key is vulnerable, drop us an email or call. We’d much rather see you for a security upgrade than see your car on a CCTV clip.
